Ride for Life

Topsham to Venice in Aid of Cancer Research

The Riders

"Who's crazy idea was this, anyway?" asks American wine, food, and travel writer Marc Millon. Italian restaurateur Nello Ghezzo (known affectionately as "The Beast") shrugs sheepishly but does not answer.

The Ride

Cycling from Topsham, Devon to Venice, Italy is no mere jaunt around the block. The distance -- 1300 miles or about 2000 kilometres -- is daunting enough, but the real challenge is the mountainous pre-alpine terrain leading to the formidable crossing of the Alps themselves. Our proposed route will make your knees turn to jelly.

The Ride for Life Challenge

Join Marc and Nello on a century training ride (or just ride part of the route) on May 18th that is a real challenge: heading from the Devon south coast across the county by way of the lovely Exe Valley, then climbing to the roof of Exmoor. Your efforts will be rewarded, we assure you, with a great slap-up pasta meal!

Training Rides in Devon

Devon, our home county, is a great area for cycling. From the south coast along the English Channel up splendid river valleys and across high and lonely Exmoor to North Devon; or hill training on the granite hills of Dartmoor; or simply day riding around our home terrain of East Devon centering on the Exe Valley and its surrounding hills: there are always plenty of challenging rides to enjoy. Here are some of our favorites.

Trip Diary

Follow Marc and Nello's epic ride live as it happens, following all their aches and pains and triumphs: starting here on June 12!
